Machine Translation (MT) is a common productivity enhancement tool in the translation process. It helps translators deliver content faster. Post-editing is the process that can be used to create a full professional quality translation from the draft produced by Machine Translation.
However, not all Machine Translation is equal. The confidentiality of customer data is critical to Lionbridge. For that reason, Lionbridge also uses a "no-trace" mode when requesting draft translation from its MT suppliers, which means that the content that is sent to Machine Translation engines is not stored in any way by any third party, including the MT supplier.
Using "No-Trace" Machine Translation and other Required Data Practices:
Whenever Lionbridge performs post-editing tasks for its clients, connections to the MT systems are always encrypted and only use no-trace modes, therefore ensuring that no source material data is captured by third parties. If, as a linguist providing services to Lionbridge, Lionbridge instructs you to use Machine Translation, you will be provided with instruction how to do so using the no-trace modes and encrypted connection to the MT system. For this reason, Lionbridge usually provides MT output to linguists, so that there is no need for linguists to run the Machine Translation task, only the post-editing task.
Linguists who are working on Lionbridge projects in any capacity should never use a method that is not explicitly sanctioned by Lionbridge to send content related to their Lionbridge tasks to an external computer system. This includes translation services such as DeepL, Google Translate, and Microsoft Translator, and any other text-processing or storage systems, as Lionbridge cannot then guarantee the confidentiality of its customers' source material.
